Apple has released iOS 17.5 for iPhone users worldwide on Monday, May 13, 2024. This update comes more than two months after the launch of iOS 17.4 and brings several exciting new features to various applications, including News, Podcasts, and privacy enhancements.

iOS 17.5 is available for download on iPhone XS and newer models. Users can install this update by going to Settings > General > Software Update. Here are the key new features introduced in iOS 17.5.

Sideloading from Developer Websites

With iOS 17.5, Apple has added the ability to download third-party apps through sideloading, specifically for users in the European Union. This means that users in the EU can now download apps directly from developer websites. However, app developers must agree to the new App Store business terms in the EU, which include paying a Core Technology Fee of 0.50 euros per new installation after reaching 1 million downloads annually. As a promotion, Apple is waiving this fee for the first 1 million installations.

This feature is the latest in a series of EU-specific updates, following the release of iOS 17.4, which allowed users in Europe to download alternative app stores to comply with the EU Digital Markets Act (DMA). This anti-monopoly law requires Apple to enable sideloading by March 6, 2024, to continue operating in the region. With sideloading, iPhone users in the EU can download apps from web browsers like Google.

Third-Party Tracker Detection

The iOS 17.5 update also introduces Cross-Platform Tracking Protection. This feature alerts iPhone users if a compatible Bluetooth tracker that does not belong to them is moving with them, regardless of the operating system used by the device. This protection aims to prevent stalking through tracking accessories like AirTag, which rely on Bluetooth to connect to gadgets.

Repair Mode for Service

iOS 17.5 includes a new repair mode feature. When taking an iPhone to an Apple store for repairs, Apple advises users to disable the Find My feature first. Typically, users disable this feature at the service location. However, once Find My is turned off, Apple activates Stolen Device Protection, which can delay the repair process by up to an hour.

This update continues Apple’s efforts to enhance the iPhone user experience by adding features that improve security, privacy, and convenience. iPhone users in the EU now enjoy greater flexibility in downloading apps, while tracker detection and repair mode offer additional protection against stalking and theft.
